Kris Kringle

Kris Kringle is a rapidly growing tradition across Ireland. Also known as Chris Kindle or Secret Santa we have come to embrace the idea with much enthusiasm. And why not? It has a great, fun element and is an inexpensive way to exchange gifts in a lighthearted atmosphere where nobody gets left out.

The name Kris Kringle is derived from the German word Christkind meaning Christ child. The Christkind is traditionally seen as the gift giver in certain areas of Austria, Germany, Italy, France and many other parts of Europe. In Ireland of course we adopted Santa for the task.

The rules are simple. Any group of people can be involved and it is very popular in offices and schools around the country. Everybody puts their name on a piece of paper, folds it to keep it hidden and the names are then mixed up in a hat. Then each person takes out one of the papers and they have to buy a Christmas gift for the person who's name they pulled out.
They are not allowed to divulge the name of the person they are buying for. There is a limit put on how much you can spend and it is usually quite low as these are only meant to be token gifts accepted as fun and novel.
The main fun element is that because the buyer remains anonymous the gifts can often be outrageous and inappropriate. So on the day chosen to open the gifts, everybody has to open them in front of the group and be prepared. It is down to the luck of the draw as to whether you love your gift or possibly even hate it!
